Planned Gifts Through a Will or Trust

Charitable Giving in Your Will

A will is an essential planning tool for your legacy. This document designates many important elements when you pass away, including who receives your property, names guardians for minor children, provide a plan for pets, and more. If you did not create your own will, the state has made one for you under the rules of intestacy. Unfortunately, these plans do not designate to charities, often leaving an important element of a person’s legacy unaccounted for.

Through a will, you may choose to leave a part of your estate to Assistance Dogs of Hawaii and make an impact on this cause and others that you love, for years to come.

Charitable Giving in Your Trust

A second estate planning tool that you may be considering, is a trust. A trust is a document that you create during your lifetime to hold assets that will carry out your estate planning wishes. There are many types of trusts and depending on your unique situation, one may be best for you. Consult with your estate planning attorney to learn more.

Beneficiary Designations

  • Retirement Account

  • Life Insurance

  • Checking/Savings

  • Investment Account

Why use a beneficiary designation?

Assets not included in your will are known as non-probate assets. These are assets that are transferred through a beneficiary designation form, or through a payable on death (POD) designation, which are each essentially a type of contract. They are relatively easy to modify or revoke and don’t necessitate the creation of a custom-drafted document like a will or a trust. Examples of non-probate assets include 401(k)s, IRAs, life insurance policies, POD bank or investment accounts, and various other accounts. Designating Assistance Dogs of Hawaii as a beneficiary can have a significant impact and potentially help avoid unwanted taxes for your heirs.
